Nepal is a landlocked country with a total land area of 147,181 sq. kilometres. Roughly rectangular in shape, the country extends approximately 885 km. from east to west and between 145 km. (at its narrowest point) to 241 km. (at its broadest point) from north to south. China borders Nepal in the north and by India in the south, west and east. Its surface is divided into three geographical zones: the Himalayas to the north; the mid-Himalayas, or hill region, with long terraced slopes and fertile valleys in the central area; and the flat sub-tropical Terai region to the south. Nepal's capital and principal city is Kathmandu, home to over one million people. Other major towns are Birgunj, Pokhara, Biratnagar, Hetauda, Nepalgunj and Narayanghat.
